Hurling Tournament 2019

When Master Emmet O’ Neill issued school invites, via Cumann na mBunscol, for the annual Carrickmore Outdoor Hurling Tournament, I doubt even he could have envisaged the huge response. Indeed, given the fact that almost 20 teams entered, a fun blitz was run alongside the main tournament.

By all accounts, it was a terrific day’s hurling for St. Conor’s, Omagh; Carrickmore ‘B’; Aughnacloy; Tattysallagh; Tullysaran; Glencull; Killyclogher; Castlecaulfield; Christ The King P.S; Dungannon and Clogher. Maith sibh.

6 teams, split into two sections, entered the main Cup competition. Section ‘A’ comprised Roan St. Patrick’s, St. Brigid’s P.S. Altamuskin and Gaelscoil Aodha Rua, Dún Geanainn. Section ‘B’ contained St. Lawrence’s P.S. Fintona, St. Colmcille’s P.S. Carrickmore and St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson. Spectacular hurling was the order of the day. Despite their tremendous efforts, Fintona, Roan, Altamuskin and Gaelscoil Aodha Rua all fell just short of a final berth. One thing is for sure, they are all superb hurlers!

Following thrilling semi-finals, we were left us with two teams standing:  St. Colmcille’s P.S. Carrickmore and St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson. These two went toe-to-toe in an all-out attempt to lift the silverware. After a great deal of heroic hurling, Carmen can consider themselves unlucky to narrowly miss out. However, their endeavours earned them CnmB silver medals. A formidable Recarson, meanwhile, had the honour of lifting the Cup and county gold medals after completing a remarkable county hurling double of Indoor and Outdoor titles. Theirs was a most-deserved victory. Comhghairdeas!

The host venue for the day was Carrickmore’s wonderful Éire Óg pitch. The facilities were top class! Refereeing for us, we had County Coaches Conor Gormley, Lachlan Uí Dhonnghaile and Ryan Keenan as well as renowned coach Kevin Cunningham. Cheers lads! They brought great expertise to proceedings. Emmet O’ Neill (Cumann na mBunscol) was on hand to conduct the medal and trophy presentation, and he coordinated this very successful event.

Roll on next year! To all those involved: Go raibh míle maith agaibh.
