ALLIANZ CUMANN Na mBUNSCOL

‘Indoor Hurling & Camogie’ Heat 2: OMAGH

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain held the second of two scheduled heats, on Tuesday 19 January, of the annual 5-a-side ‘Indoor Hurling and Camogie’ for primary schools in Omagh’s Station Centre. A total of 10 local schools entered teams in both codes for this qualifying heat, which produced a tremendously high level of skill from all involved. Tyrone’s Games Development Administrator, Anne Daly, expertly officiated at the event. Tyrone’s Allianz Cumann na mBunscol PRO, Eddie Doris, co-ordinated events over the two days.

Four schools competed for a coveted place in the Tyrone Indoor Camogie Final. The girls from St. Patrick’s P.S. Castlederg and Gaelscoil na gCrann battled bravely in the competition, but just fell short on the day despite their valiant efforts. Maith sibh! The teams who eventually prevailed were St. Colmcille’s P.S. Carrickmore and Recarson P.S., with both teams qualifying for the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Camogie Finals. A memorable highlight of the day was the thrilling 4-4 draw played-out by these talented girls. These two triumphant teams now await the qualifying schools from the East Tyrone heats to be held in Dungannon later this week.

Six school teams competed in the Hurling competition. Once again, the standard of play was of an extremely high nature. This is testament to the great work being done by many people in our Primary Schools. After another absorbing competition, St. Brigid’s P.S. Altamuskin, Gaelscoil na gCrann, St. Patrick’s P.S. Castlederg and Recarson P.S. bowed out despite displaying some wonderful skills.  Section winners St. Colmcille’s P.S. Carrickmore and Our Lady of Lourdes, Greencastle, proved just that little bit stronger and, as such, qualified for the county Hurling Final. Well done, boys!

The eagerly awaited Finals in Camogie and Hurling will be held in Omagh at the end of January. Our congratulations and best wishes go to all the children who participated in these games. Exciting times lie ahead for these talented pupils!
