GIRLS’ INDOOR FOOTBALL HEAT 8: OMAGH

Attention turned today to Omagh’s Station Centre for our girl footballers where five schools battled it out to win this heat and, subsequently, a place in the Co. Final. Na Cailini from St. Scire's Trillick, Christ The King Omagh, Gaelscoil na gCrann an Omaigh, Our Lady of Lourdes Greencastle agus St. Ronan's Recarson.

A round-robin format was employed whereby each school got to play each other – a total of four matches per school.

The teachers helped make the draw and when that was completed, the girls were ready for action. There followed a series of enthralling games. Most of the matches went to the wire.

As the league matches progressed, two teams stood out from the others: Recarson and Greencastle. Both squads deserve enormous credit for their tremendous efforts and skill levels. Indeed, when these teams met in the earlier matches, they produced a 7-goal thriller which went the way of Recarson on a 5-2 scoreline giving Ronan’s a perfect 100% win record of 4 wins from 4 games.

These 2 schools would meet again in the day’s Heat Final. Both schools gave everything in a nip-and-tuck encounter. However, it wasn’t to be for the brave girls from Greencastle. They were determined to end the perfect Recarson win record, but they just came up short on a scoreline 3-2.

On the other hand, these talented St. Ronan's girls now progress to the county Final at MUSA Indoor arena, Cookstown, on Wednesday 13 March. They are a formidable outfit. We wish them well, indeed.

Our thanks to the staff of Omagh’s Station Centre for their great help and hospitality.  Thanks also to Marty Devlin for his expert officiating, and to Pat McGivern (Tyrone Cumann na mBunscol) for overseeing the smooth running of this event. Eights heats down – just one to go!

Maith sibh go léir.
