Boys' Indoor Football, Omagh: Heat 6

4th Feb 2019

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol held its sixth heat of the annual 5-a-side Boys’ Indoor Gaelic Football for primary schools today in Omagh’s wonderful Station Centre. Six local schools entered teams for this qualifying heat

Section ‘A’ contained Sacred Heart P.S. Tattyreagh; Drumduff P.S. and St. Caireall’s P.S. Aghyaran. The Drumduff boys were impressive in topping the section with Tattyreagh claiming the runners-up spot with a crucial win against a brave Aghyaran side who just missed out on qualifying. Drumduff and Tattyreagh therefore made the semi-finals.

Section ‘B’ comprised teams from Tummery P.S; St. Patrick’s P.S. Gortin, and Knocknagor P.S. The lads from Tummery topped their section with the Gortin boys joining them in the semi-finals. Alas for Knocknagor, qualification was just out of reach despite playing some fabulous football.

In the semi-finals the Section winners proved just too strong for their opponents. Tummery advanced to the heat Final by seeing-off Tattyreagh – who would contest the 3rd place play-off. Meanwhile, the other Section winners, Drumduff, advanced against Gortin.

The match for third place was a belter. Extra-time was required to separate the sides before St. Patrick’s P.S. Gortin registered a 3rd place victory against a brave Tattyreagh side who had emptied the tank. However, credit to both schools for their exploits. Maith sibh.

Drumduff and Tummery gave us an 8-goal Final. Both teams were determined to do their best and that was exactly what they did in a superb final. Ultimately, the greater scoring threat of Master Poyntz’ side overcame Master McCrystall’s gallant Tummery lads – but they can be very proud of their tremendous efforts on the day. Meanwhile, a well-earned Tyrone Indoor Football County Final spot awaits the Drumduff lads on Tuesday 12 March in Cookstown’s MUSA Indoor Arena.

We wish them well. Ádh mór oraibh.

Thanks to our referee Sean McCartan and to the friendly staff of Omagh Station Centre. Mickey Quinn (Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain) ensured the smooth running of the day’s games.

Well done, everyone! Go raibh maith agaibh.
