Boys' Indoor Football, Omagh: Heat 2

BOYS’ INDOOR FOOTBALL HEAT 2: Omagh

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain held the second Heat of its 2020 Boys’ Indoor Football competition in Omagh’s wonderful Station Centre. Five schools, with two weather apologies, competed in an action-packed day of tremendous football, providing plenty of excitement.

The format of the day’s play saw 10 matches played in a round-robin basis, where each team got 4 games apiece. We had schools from Omagh Integrated P.S., St. Ronan’s P.S. Recarson, St. Scire’s P.S. Trillick, St. Lawrence’s P.S. Fintona and Our Lady of Lourdes P.S. Greencastle.

There wasn’t a great deal between the teams with many games ending in draws or single-goal wins. Omagh, Recarson and Greencastle deserve great credit for their endeavours and tremendous spirit in their matches but narrowly missed-out on qualification to the final stage.

However, two schools proved to have just that little bit extra on the day: St. Scire’s P.S. Trillick with 3 wins and St. Lawrence’s P.S. Fintona with a perfect record of 4 wins from 4. Indeed, these two schools progressed to contest the Heat Final.

When they met earlier in the round-robin stages, Fintona prevailed by the odd goal in three on a 2:1 scoreline. Our final was equally close. Trillick largely fielded a skilful P6 side but, despite a huge effort, Master Gallagher’s side succumbed to a more experienced Fintona team 3:1. What a great game by both teams. Ultimately, though, it is Master McMullan’s St. Lawrence’s P.S. Fintona who progress to the Co. Final in March. We wish them well. Ádh mór oraibh.

Thanks to our referee Brian McGinn for his expert officiating and to the friendly staff of Omagh Station Centre. Damian Kelly (Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Thír Eoghain) ensured the smooth running of the day’s games.

Well done, everyone! Go raibh maith agaibh.
